The Center for Disease Control Visits Lawrence County
In 2017, the Center for Disease Control awarded a two year grant to Purdue Extension-Lawrence County to develop an obesity prevention coalition. Lawrence County currently has the second highest obesity rate in the state of Indiana, with 40 percent of its population affected. Since initiation of the grant, the Live Well Coalition has recruited community members and stakeholders to survey local residents and develop strategies to deal with this serious physical health issue. Their efforts have resulted in the creation of the Bluejacket Trail in Mitchell and a new Inclusion Garden at the Solution Center.
In September of 2017, evaluators from the Centers for Disease Control came to Lawrence County to assess the coalition’s progress and to present an overview of what other communities across the country are doing to address high obesity rates. Links to slideshows summarizing their visit are below.
